How Dangerous Are Molds to Your Health?

francophonie March 14, 2022 Unite Together

Hazardous agents that live in homes can impact your health adversely, particularly when exposed to them. Most people spend approximately 16 hours every day at home, especially kids under seven and elderly individuals at age 64 and above. Mold often builds up and grows in damp areas and inadequately ventilated buildings. Now, let us learn the health threats that come along with molds.

Five Health Issues of Molds

The majority of people don’t like seeing molds, so they take quick action to get rid of them. Some disregard it when they see molds in some areas of their homes and do nothing about it. If you’re either one of the two kinds of people mentioned above, do you know the health problems created by molds? We have listed five of them below to enlighten and encourage you to remove molds in your home when you see one.

1. Allergic Reactions

Molds can produce substances that might trigger allergic reactions, irritants, and harmful compounds. Touching or breathing in mold spores can cause allergic reactions like hay fever signs, such as itchy nose, sore throat, sore throat, sneezing, red eyes, runny nose, and skin rash. Mold allergies are very frequent and can be delayed or immediate.

2. Weakened immune systems

Some kinds of molds can cause various effects on humans. When breathed in, molds can make you sick. For individuals with weaker immune systems and immunosuppressed, breathing in mold can have negative health impacts that can be worse and might even cause death.

3. Mycotoxin toxicity

Mycotoxin is a byproduct of the organisms of the kingdom of fungi, where molds are categorized. It is a harmful element that presents a serious health danger to people and animals. It can also cause adverse health results ranging from severe poisoning to long-term effects like cancer and immune deficiency.

According to research, people who reside in water-damaged or contaminated structures are connected to major health problems caused by mycotoxins. Mold poisoning or mycotoxicosis is one such health concern. So if you spot indications of water damage in your home, hire water restoration companies immediately to prevent mold and mildew from developing.

4. Triggers asthma

People who were not previously allergic to mold may become allergic to it when they inhaled or touched mold. It may trigger asthma symptoms, like cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing when breathed in. While individuals with allergies are the most susceptible to responding to mold, non-allergic (non-sensitized) individuals are not spared from the irritations it can lead to.

Floods, leaking pipes, roofings, moist surfaces, and ceilings are usually the culprits of mold and mildew development. Constantly look around your home and check if there are water damages that can be a potential house for molds. Have a PuroClean restoration expert come over immediately if you see the damage that needs to be repaired at once.

5. Fungal Infection

Mucormycosis (also known as zygomycosis previously) is a severe and unusual fungal infection triggered by mucormycetes, a group of molds present in the environment, particularly in soil and decaying organic matter like animal dung, compost piles, and leaves. The stated fungus is not really dangerous to some people; however, it can affect the skin, lungs, brain, and sinuses of people with weak immune systems.
